Darius Takes Over
Darius takes to the mike to chat about his favourite songs, answer your email questions and introduce his debut single ‘Colourblind’. Check out his Takeover here…
The Takeover
Hi this is Darius and this is my Takeover.
First up my favourite single by Michael Jackson, it's 'Billy Jean' - what a song.
You know me best from 'Pop Idol', but I've been writing songs since the age of 13, seriously since the age of 14. One of the songs that I wrote at the very beginning of the 'Pop Idol' show was 'Colourblind', my debut single.
Lots of people ask my why I didn't sign to Simon Cowell when he offered me a record deal at the end of the show. The answer is simply this - firstly I didn't want to release a cover and secondly I didn't want to release so quickly after the show because I didn't think it would be a reflection of the music I wanted to do.
Instead I signed to my Producer hero, my popular culture rock idol, Steve Lillywhite at Universal. He offered me a five album deal, and I'm very proud and privileged to say that he's at the helm of my album. He's the man that's guided U2 and Travis, amongst many other acts.
Next, we're going to play another of my favourite songs, it's 'No Woman, No Cry' by Bob Marley.
'Stay, I Miss You' by Lisa Lobe was one of the songs that inspired me to pick up the guitar and start teaching myself how to play it. I think it's a great song, and one that we haven't heard enough recently.
Clare Mabel asks: What has been your favourite moment this year?
'Pop Idol' was a great rid for me and I enjoyed every minute of it. Each Saturday we were performing live in front of a huge audience, and I got to perform some of my favourite songs. My favourite moment was after 'Pop Idol' had just finished with the 'Pop Idol Tour'. It was incredibly performing in front of live audiences up and down the country. We got a great response from people, and I really look forward to getting back on the stage. The moment that really shaped the rest of my year, and hopefully my career, was meeting my Producer. He's just arrived back from the States after a five-year gap. I found myself having a kebab with him in a Turkish restaurant and at the end of the conversation he offered me my deal! I signed on for the right reasons - because of the music - and hopefully you'll enjoy it.
Next up is another song I love, it's called 'Strong' by Robbie Williams.
I remember when that song was released. Round about the same time, Gary Barlow released 'Stronger', and of course Robbie's song trounced it! It's a cracking song that went on to win the Ivor Novello award for Song Writing. That sums up my views and ideas on writing music - Robbie obviously put his heart and soul into the lyrics. They're very honest and vulnerable and give us a glimpse of Robbie.
'Colourblind' is a glimpse of truth, an upbeat feeling that I hope people will relate to.
This is another of my favourite songs by my Pop Idol - 'Don't Tell Me' by Madonna.
Talking of idols, here's another one of mine - Marvin Gaye with 'Sexual Healing'.
Up next is a great mixing pot of different styles from one of the most successful bands in the history of music - Queen with 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
That’s it from me, I hope you enjoyed my Takeover – see you soon!
