Hello!
Cosmo Girl
The MTV Immies are back, with one of its star performers being Darius Danesh. ARLENE CHANG gives you a lowdown on his life, his music and his inspirations
All of 24 years, Darius Danesh once said, "I'll have a No.1 single and platinum album before I'm 35." And he has fulfilled his prophecy sooner than he could have ever imagined. With his hit single 'Colourblind' hitting the No.1 spot on the UK charts, and his second album 'Live Twice' due for release soon, he has come a long way from being the scorned participant of the popular UK show, 'Pop Idol'. In a telephonic interview from London, Darius talks about his rise to fame, his songs, his experiences and his expectations from India.
India is a very exciting prospect to me...
It is the first time that I will be coming to India and I just can't wait to be there. My father has had an opportunity to work in India and my brother travelled to India just last year. So I have heard much from them about the beautiful country, especially the culture, food, geography and exquisite architecture that I'd like to experience first-hand. I also have to admit that India's contribution to music and films is more significant than the West would like to acknowledge. I'm sure it's going to be an amazing experience.
'Colourblind'...
The response to 'Colourblind' simply swept me off my feet. I did not expect it to be such a big hit and I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to perform and do what I love. I was especially flattered when 'Colourblind' went straight to No.1 and stayed there for two weeks beating Britney Spears, George Michael and Will Smith. George Michael has always been a huge inspiration to me and it was wonderful to know that he was a fan of my song. I must also state that it has been a pleasure working with Universal Records and I feel privileged to having also worked on my second album with them and some of the best music producers in the world.
My comeback to the music scene after 'Pop Idol'...
I have always been passionate about composing original music. A very good piece of advice three years ago from one of the people I look up to and respect very much, Sean Connery, also pushed me into realising my dream. When I met him, he told me, "You only ever fail if you stopped trying." These words inspired me hugely and I decided that I must not give up on my quest for making music and pursuing my passion. 'Dive-In' was my first album in 2002 and it is now being followed by my second album 'Live Twice'.
The MTV Immies...
Like I said earlier this is my first trip to India and I'm very honoured to be performing here at the MTV Immies. I'm also very excited to be putting up a sneak preview of my second album 'Live Twice' which will be released soon. I can't quiet disclose the line-up of the songs I'm scheduled to perform. So you'll have to wait and watch, but I can assure you that it is going to be quite spectacular.
My formative years...
I studied English at the Edinburgh University because I wanted to be a songwriter.
My strongest influences were George Michael and The Beatles. A few years ago I had a more boisterous image, I was young, naive and enthusiastic. From then till now, I have grown-up and I hope to have become more mature, as a person and a songwriter. All of my music is autobiographical and is a vent for my feelings and life experiences that I'd like to share with the world.
Postponed release of 'Live twice'...
The delay in the album's release was due to my father's illness. I wanted to spend more time with my father and be by his side as much as I could. One day he told me, "You must record this album. I'm fighting time to see the achievements of my children." This album is inspired by my father and dedicated to him.
Success and me...
I feel lucky to have been able to travel the world and experience different facets of life. I have looked at success favourably and am glad that I am able to help people less privileged than me. I hope that I have made my family happy and proud of me, especially after the personal crisis we have all been through. It has been an adaptive process and we have coped well with it. At the core, I hope I am still the friend, brother and person I used to be.
For the boy-turned-man, yet another dream will be fulfilled when he visits India to perform at the MTV Immies. Watch out for him!
