Double Dynamite!

gMagazine India February 2005

We profile two twenty-something talented musicians from abroad who’ve already begun stealing Indian hearts. Their unique music, captivating voices and energetic personas are making young folk and lovers hum their tunes and swing their bodies! Let’s meet Sean and Darius!

Daring Darius

UK pop singer Darius is the product of a Pop Idol search! Today, he has carved a niche for himself in the wide world of pop music. He lately performed in Mumbai at the MTV IMMIES. A 24-year-old, 6 foot-5 inch tall boy-turned-man, Darius, sports a classically handsome face.

What do you feel about your first trip to India?

I’ve been struck by the beauty and the warmth of a welcome bestowed on me. India is an exotic, lively and really moving place. I like the people, the culture and its natural beauty. I like the cuisine in particular.

Your name Darius Danesh sounds very Indian…

I hail from an East-West background. My father is Iranian and mother is Scottish. My father’s name is Dr. Booth Danesh which explains the Danesh in my name.

What’s your new album all about?

Live Twice is my second and new album and it aspires to be music of the likes of Enrique Iglesias and Bryan Adams. Live Twice doesn’t mean that there’s a James Bond here (laughs) but means that one has got a chance to live again. ‘Live Twice’ is a song I wrote for my father when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I put my career on hold and decided to concentrate on my family. We bonded as a family and I wrote this song to tell my father how I felt. On hearing it he said that life was too short to keep it on hold, so I recorded the song and an album and dedicated it to him. The wonderful news is that soon after, the cancer had disappeared. He was cured. The title track is a ballad and I dedicate it to anyone who is missing a loved one, who is going to lose a loved one, or has broken up with a boyfriend, or anyone who is experiencing a break in a relationship. We all go through that feeling of saying something that we later regret, if only we could live twice.

So you must be a very spiritual person.

I am. This cure was more because of prayer, meditation and medical research and also maybe because both my parents are doctors.

What about your first album?

It’s called Dive In and is dedicated to all the girls in my life. I wrote about the few relationships that I had in my life.

Going back to your love for India, have you seen any Bollywood movies?

Yes, of course! When flying down to India they showed us two or three Hindi movies. I’ve seen a few clips of the movies, noted the colourful dresses the women wear, like the saris and the two-piece outfits. They look so graceful.

Would you like to collaborate with any Indian artiste?

I definitely would like to do something with an Indian singer and maybe also have a beautiful Indian actress in my music video.
