Hello!
Cosmo Girl
At 22 Darius Danesh is a very happy boy. His first album went platinum and he's about to storm Europe. On top of that he travels the world, dates beautiful women and still has time to see his mates.
It was reported you were getting hitched a few months ago. Was that true?
Those wedding rumours were complete rubbish. The girl involved was just trying to get publicity for the launch of her girl band - I didn't even know her! I'd like to think my parents would get an invite before reading about my supposed wedding in a tabloid newspaper! I'm actually enjoying being a bachelor. I hope that when I hit 50, I'll be able to look back and remember that at 22, I was young, single, well-travelled and had had the opportunity to date some of the most beautiful women I'd ever met!
What's your biggest turn-on in a woman… and your biggest turn-off?
I like natural girls. I'm all for the simple jeans, T-shirt and heels look - a little make-up and hair down. Great skin is a real plus point - and loads of lip balm definitely turns me on! I don't like fake-looking girls with too much make-up - or cosmetic surgery.
Britney's our gorgeous cover girl this issue. You've met her - is she your kind of girl?
When I met Britney, she was very bubbly and very sweet. She looks fabulous without make-up and has really cute features - big eyes and a white smile. She's actually much quieter than I thought she'd be - I guess it's all just part of her performance, so she stands out in that way. She enjoys dressing up and looking good but she's not hung up about it. She was also very considerate to other people, and a very patient listener. Plus she's passionate about what she does, and I love that in a girl. But though she's got many of the qualities I'm attracted to, she's not actually my type.
Which female celebrity would you like to partner to the Oscars and why?
Angelina Jolie - she looked wicked at the BAFTAs, or Cameron Diaz. Yes, I'll go for Cameron! She's a funky chick, and I bet she'd be great company!
What is your biggest dream?
Last year was such an incredible year. I was given a second chance by the British public who voted me third in Pop Idol, then my single Colourblind got to number one. My album, Dive In went platinum in December, so now I'm hoping 2003 will be even more exciting. The UK Dive In tour is a big thing for me -it's something I've dreamed of doing for six years now. I've done Wembley and played to 100,000 people at Party in the Park so this time I'm going to play in small venues and bring a more intimate, personal feel to my music.
What happened to your ponytail?
My hairdresser, Taylor Ferguson, has been going on at me for years to get my hair cut but I've always been stubborn and refused. I joined the Territorial Army at 16 and my hair was cut really short, like it is now, so when I left I was adamant I was going to let it grow longer again. I wasn't going to let anyone tell me what to do. I didn't have a haircut for three years, but the final straw was when y eight-year -old brother, Cyrus, told me I should get rid of the ponytail and goatee, so I did! The style change gave me a new lease of life, I felt more comfortable and, ironically, more like a 16-year-old again. I don't feel I'm trying to be somebody I'm not now, so I'd never grow it back. I don't think a new image changes you, you have to be comfortable with who you are, then image follows.
What's in your bathroom cabinet?
Clinique Skin Supplies for Men. I stick to a daily routine using the Face Scrub, £13.50, and M Lotion moisturiser, from £14. And my hair gets a wash on a daily basis. I use Schwarzkopf Osis Mess Up matt gum, £8.70, does the trick. It's unbelievable - it's a sort of shine serum, and it transforms dull, lifeless hair! For fragrance, Calvin Klein Escape, £32.50 for 50ml, is fantastic.
Do you still get to spend time at home with your family?
To be honest, I'm never in one city for long - and I've been country-hopping around Europe to launch my album. I see my family but not as often as I'd like, so it's nice to treat them when I can. Before Christmas, Itook my brother Cyrus to a Blue gig and we went backstage together!
Are you still close to your old friends?
No, I've dumped them all (laughing)! No, seriously, while my working life has changed so much, my friends and I are actually much closer. I have three friends who will always be my best mates, one's a hairstylist, one's a writer and the third's a DJ. It's great, as we can all help each other out. Sometimes I invite them on the road - and if I'm dating a girl, she'll come too!
What have you got planned for the next stage of your life?
I'm launching my new single, Girl In The Moon. It's a ballad and means a lot to me ; we're going to record a live version on the tour too, to appear on the single, so my fans will be the first to hear it. I'm lucky because at Mercury Records (whose artists include Sir Elton John and Ja Rule) I have total control over my music. Everything my fans hear comes from me.
Tell me a secret you haven't told someone before.
I pulled one of Robbie Williams' ex girlfriends! (I press him for more juice!)…No, I'm not going to say any more.
If you were stuck on a desert island, what would you take with you?
I'd take a freezer full of Ben & Jerry's Chocolate fudge Brownie ice-cream - it's to die for! My Gibson acoustic guitar, I write everything on it - I wouldn't be able to write songs on anything else. And my little brother Cyrus, he's the funniest, most enterprising person ever. We'd get fat on Ben & Jerry's and write hit songs.
