Hello!
Cosmo Girl
If there's one thing that can be said of Darius it's that he's never stuck for conversation.
You have to put plenty of time aside for interviewing him, for this Glaswegian can talk...and talk...and talk. And not in a bad way either. He's affable and can be astonishingly open. Pity then, he couldn't write songs in the same way he could chat - at least about a year ago.
For Darius stumbled upon a severe case of writer's block as he started to work on his second album.
"It took exactly 11 months with the writing and the producing," he tells me. "It was the stereotypical thing of being surrounded by scrunched up bits of paper on the floor. I was frustrated with myself. I didn't know if I'd ever write again.
"I realised that 11 months ago, just before I sat down to record and write the album. I was putting myself under pressure to improve on the material I had written.
"With the first album, I wasn't really writing songs for me, I was writing them for the industry and public.
"So there I was, coming up with nothing substantial or original and not being proud of it."
The catalyst for Darius was bolt-out-of-the-blue news he never wanted to hear - his father had terminal cancer.
Then he heard how his friend's parents had been killed instantly in a car accident.
"My feelings of regret changed somewhat to gratitude.
"I knew I had to make the most of my time with my father. At least I was getting some sort of second chance with him. "I sat down and I started to write."
And the resulting, pretty much autobiographical album, Live Twice, out on Monday, is Darius at his best.
Darius's new single Kinda Love is set to chart this Sunday.
