Hello!
Cosmo Girl
Darius has come a long way from his first every television performance – that unforgettable rendition of Britney Spear’s Ooops I Did It Again. With a new single out now, he popped into the NewWoman offices to do a live chat…and make the team swoon in the process!
Darius: A big hi to all the New Women out there. Looking forward to talking to you guys.
Michelle: If your career was to end today what would be your fave memory and your biggest regret?
Darius: So many memories to choose from - Colour Blind going to Number One and keeping Britney off the top spot! The album Diving going platinum, supporting Shakira on her world tour in Paris... I wouldn't have believed any of it could have happened if you told me this three years ago. I feel very lucky to have the life I have and I don't believe in regrets
Kitty: Do you think you’ve made it now as a pop star or do you feel you’ve still got a lot to prove?
Darius: I don't think I’ve made it, I’ve just got my feet on the first rung of the ladder. And it's a tall ladder! I'm a baby in the business, but one day I aspire to being a great singer/song writer.
Cherry: Are you still embarrassed by the Britney Spears Ooops I Did It Again rendition that you did on Pop Idol?
Darius: Everyone's got photos of a bad hair day in their family albums and we all make mistakes - I just made mine in front of millions of people on National TV! But no regrets, I think the things we do no matter what others think of them, shape us into who we are today.
Nancy: Do you have any plans to release Sexy Individual as a single and where did you get you inspiration for it?
Darius: There was a girl who always used to pass by the window of the Italian restaurant I worked in Glasgow and she brightened my day. The song is the story of how I met her and asked her out.
MadMae: How do you choose what gets released as an A side and B side?
Darius: The A side is the song on the radio from the album. The B side tends to be a song that for personal and creative reasons is something released for the fans.
Cherry: Now you’re single are you looking for Miss Right?
Darius: It’s when you're not looking that you fall in love and right now when not working I'm spending all my love and time with my family.
Princess: If I was to cook you a meal what would you request?
Darius: What a treat! Do you do Italian? If not, how about a Thai stir-fry and I'll bring dessert.
Jenni: What advice would you give for someone going on a first date tonight?
Darius: Don't try too hard! Just be yourself, smile, relax and let him get to know who you are - the way your friends know you. And wear something you feel comfortable in - good luck!
Bubba: Have you had any interesting offers since your kilt moment?
Darius: I've been asked to endorse a new brand of Cumberland Sausage! Not really...
Debby: What do the beads around your neck symbolise?
Darius: My mother was brought up following the Church of Scotland and my father is a Muslim. I have a great faith and have been brought up with an understanding and curiosity of different religions. The beads symbolise that I'm spiritual as opposed to strictly religious and they remind me to pray.
Princess: Now you’re famous what designer labels do you wear?
Darius: Dolce and Gabanna is my favourite. And Dolce, if you're listening, I love the new cut Milan suit range...
Gina: What's the most expensive item you have bought?
Darius: It was a flat in London this year. Although my home is still Glasgow, I've now got a base in London.
Princess: What hair products do you use?
Darius: Sebastian Clay to style, Johnson's baby shampoo and nothing else.
Laura: Have you ever met a celebrity taller than you?
Darius: Sean Connery is pretty tall - I see eye to eye with him. Billy Zane's also quite tall.
Sonnet: You've met a lot of your fans at signings, were there any strange moments?
Darius: I've been proposed to, but that hasn't happened since Colour Blind!
Princess: What’s positive about being famous?
Darius: I think it's all positive. It allows me to share songs that I write with a wide audience, it's great fun and it allows me to use my public profile for good causes - from being an ambassador for the Princes Trust to raising awareness of cancer charities.
Sonnet: In a recent photo shoot you sat on the edge of a very tall building, firstly are you mad? Secondly, what does scare you?
Darius: I don't like spiders but I could sit in a bath of them without freaking out too much. I faced my biggest fear this year - losing a family member, fortunately my father is still here and making a remarkable battle against cancer.
Natalie: What is your favourite track on the album and why?
Darius: I wrote a song, which I played to my father in the hospital that brought us both to tears. He said he was fighting to see me achieve my dream. "Life is too short, don't stop today, don't pause for me, tomorrow will be too late”. Almost every song on the new album was inspired by that and written in the last six months.
Cherry: Do you have any famous buddies?
Darius: I hung out with Jamiroquai in LA and he's not nearly as debaucherous as the tabloids make him out to be. I was also very lucky to meet one of my heroes, Seal. He's such a gentleman and made me feel very at home with his friends on a special night for him.
Penny: If you could have been another figure in musical history who would you be?
Darius: Wow... It would be blasphemy to cite the legends of male solo music, but Frank Sinatra and Elvis ruled!
Abs: You must get bored of answering questions, have you got a question you would like your fans to answer?
Darius: Very good Abs. I'd love to know which B Side from the single Kinda Love is the fan's favourite...
Mandy: Have you got any plans to tour? If so, will you be doing a theatre tour or stadium?
Darius: Yes, I can't wait. The Dive In tour last year was one of the best times of my life and I look forward to performing in the immediate future. I'm going to spend a lot of time with my family in the run-up to Christmas, but tour dates will be announced on dariusmusic.com in January.
Darius: I've enjoyed this so much I don't really want it to end. I don't like goodbyes, so we'll just say au revoir.
