Darius bounces back again

By Kevin Bridges Sunday Post 24 October 2004

IF the phrase “triumph over adversity” was made for anyone in pop, it was for Darius. After his first attempt at fame and fortune ended in embarrassing failure, he bounced back and became a huge success through Pop Idol, fulfilling his dream of a Number One single, sell-out tours and a hit album. Now he’s back with follow-up album Live Twice, released tomorrow, although it very nearly didn’t see the light of day. The first problem Darius faced was a crippling bout of writer’s block.

Frightening

“I spent five months going nuts —my expectations of myself were so high. I’ve always seen myself as a songwriter even when I wasn’t famous, so it was really frightening not being able to write.

Darius was inspired by his father.

“My self-esteem hit a real low and I started to question whether I was any good. It got to the stage where I was churning things out that I wasn’t proud of, I was just going through the motions,” he revealed. What happened next was even more of a nightmare.

“My father was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Suddenly my career meant nothing, but I found myself writing a song for him. I played it to him but said I probably wouldn’t be releasing anything. “He told me he was fighting to live so he could see the achievements of his children and if I put my career on hold I’d regret it. He’s a real inspiration.” His dad’s fight against cancer is still continuing. “He’s already defied the doctors —he’s still here with us and he listens to my music every day,” Darius smiled.

Darius spends a lot of his time dashing between the USA and Britain. “I always want to keep a base in Glasgow, but I love working out there,” he said. He even met up with some famous friends, who weren’t at all snobby about his reality TV origins. “While I was staying at the Mondrian Hotel on Sunset Boulevard, I hung out with Jamiroquai and Seal by the pool, just exchanging stories. They just saw me as another songwriter,” he said. Darius was also thrilled with the reception he received from the public.

Popular

And the fact that he’s still around, while other Scottish successes from reality TV shows such as David Sneddon and Michelle McManus have struggled, shows how popular he is. But coping with his family circumstances is bound to make things harder for the time being, as he doesn’t want to be separated from his dad any more than absolutely necessary. “Technology now is great — if you have a laptop, a webcam and a phone, you can see and talk to anyone, any time, any place. If I’m away, I talk to my family like that all the time. “I’m not giving up on music, it’s part of who I am and my father has encouraged me all the way, but I don’t want to miss any precious time with him. He’s at home in Glasgow just now, getting some TLC! “They haven’t used the word remission yet, but he’s made such a miraculous recovery,” he smiled.

All Darius fans will be thrilled that his career is still on track, and they’ll agree he’s a true testament to his father’s drive and courage.
