Rushes - Darius

Oh bless our "over the border" sweetheart. He would never have done so well had he managed to get into Hear*say. He keeps on coming with his nice, sweet and innocent songs. This song is lovely, and actually gets your foot tapping along to the tune, even if you haven't got a romantic bone in your body. He wrote this song about a girl that he saw on the bus when he was 16 years old, but by the time he plucked up the courage to talk to her, he never saw her again. I think this is a great song for couples and highly recommend it.

I give this stonking, love song a 9 out of 10.

Playlouder Rushes review

Darius should have won Pop Idol, of this we are certain. Admittedly, we didn't actually watch any of it except the bits where the judges were being mean but during those brief moments when we did actually look, the one who did actually stand out as a proper star was good old smarmy D. The only reason he didn't win was all the mums and dads voted against him because Darius has sex, and they know it - they're all afraid he'd shag their daughters. They're not wrong, but that's what gives D his star quality. He's talking about cute things like his girlfriend's dimples and stomach butterflies, but self-penned 'Rushes' (Mercury) has that same saccharine-sweet/sexy ballsiness about it that made parents cinch those chastity belts up a notch. Lyrically it could use help, but at least it's not goddamn 'Evergreen'. There is one soppy ballad, which is to be expected in these market-led times but there is an extra-funky remix of 'Colourblind' that stomps all over the original

Phew! this rather strapping Scottish boy has just sung this song on my telly and I've come over all funny. Is that rushes? If I was a few years younger...

Mabel's chart tip: No.5

Daily Record Rushes Review

SILENCING all the doubters, Darius is back with another ultra-catchy track. While the pop wannabes in Popstars and Fame Academy can only dream of fame and fortune, Darius is living proof there is life beyond reality TV. Penned by the Scots star, Rushes is a fine, upstanding tune which not only showcases his distinctive vocals, but celebrates Darius' music talent. With its acoustic edge, Rushes stands head and shoulders above the rest of the commercial pop crowd.

Sneak Magazine Review of Rushes

Wayhay! No garage mix, no r 'n' b beats, no rap shoved in the middle for no reason. Darius proves great pop can be grown-up without being boring. Pure class.

Who was the 5 foot 9 fallen angelwith the devilish streak whop stole darius heart when he was just 16. We should be told because rushes is a exuberantly catchy pop rock romp which bryan adams would be proud of. That a good thing

4stars for both album and single

Radio One Review of Rushes

Who'd have thought that 'Colourblind' would be become not only end up as one of the year's Top 20 best-selling singles, but also one of the longest running singles on the chart? 'Rushes', his second single and also from the debut album 'Dive In' is quite memorable. Light years away from ex-colleagues Will&co, this deserves to be a big hit for the likeable Scot. Written by Darius and the same team behind the last one, it'll be interesting to see how it does in the Top 40.

Popworld Review of Rushes

WHAT'S THE DEAL?

That Darius has come a long way, very quickly. Just like Kylie and Britney, the fella is already in that bracket of pop stars who doesn't need a surname. And after his fair share of mickey taking on the first Popstars, he's undergone a huge transformation to become an incredibly appealing, sexy and charismatic young man. Amazing.

WHAT'S IT LIKE?

This is Darius' second solo effort, taken from his forthcoming debut album Dive In. The fella will be trying to match the number one success of 'Colourblind', the debut single that made Darius the third Pop Idol to top the charts. This upbeat, guitar-driven track was self penned and written about a hot relationship which gives him 'rushes'. After a couple of listens you'll be having them, too.

YOU'LL LOVE THIS IF YOU LIKE...

The smoothness of Enrique, mixed with a touch of Ronan's upbeat style.

TOTP Review of Rushes

The super smoothie continues his post Pop Idol revamp with a cool slice of pop sophistication. This is slick, smoochy, guitar driven pop with the non-stick Teflon singer crooning about the rushes his girlfriend gives him. It’s an unbelievably catchy hook that can't fail but are we alone in thinking Darius's chat-up technique often strays on the wrong side of cheesy.

UKMIX Review of Rushes

Darius Danesh, one of the highlights of Popstars and Pop Idol, is back! His second single "Rushes" is immensely different to his debut and No. 1 hit "Colourblind". This release is more of a soft rock/pop mid-tempo track, and is just the sort of thing Darius should be doing. It looks certain to give him a well-deserved second No. 1. 5/5 (Tiger)

Darius' second single taken, from his forthcoming album "Dive In", follows the same style as the No. 1 "Colourblind", but is pleasantly different and refreshing. On first impressions, "Rushes" seems quite weak, but it becomes much stronger after a few plays thanks to the sophisticated and rich instrumentals. Darius sounds particularly impressive and more mature on the track, but the lyrics are very cheesy. Perhaps not a second No. 1, but definitely another Top 5 success. 4/5(Paul Matthews)

DARIUS - Rushes

Odd, but it does look like Darius could be here for the duration. Along with his new humility, he's unearhted a talent for gently infectious pop that somehow manages to omit the irritant quota of most chart music.

Sunday Mirror's review of Rushes

DARIUS: Rushes (Mercury) - Cheese-ridden, yet utterly wonderful. 9/10

Capital Radio Group Review of Rushes

Planet pop - it’s a funny old place. One minute you’re the laughing stock of the nation with your excruciating rendition of ‘Baby One More Time’, the next you’re making yourself comfortable at the summit of the Top 40. Everyone, it seems, loves the underdog and Darius, against all odds has come out of the whole ‘Popstars’ / ‘Pop Idol’ experience smelling of roses. ‘Rushes’ continues where ‘Colourblind’ left off – a mid-paced, rock/pop track that is totally inoffensive but not particularly remarkable either. Extra points are awarded for integrity though because Darius wrote this himself and he didn’t sign up to Simon Cowell’s label. Another hit then, which should keep the 23-year old in tanning lotion for a little while yet.

Ceefax Review of Rushes

This energetic taster from Darius' forthcoming debut album suggests that all that self-confidence may not be so misplaced after all. Damn...

Yahoo Review of Rushes

It's amazing what can be accomplished by making an enormous fool out of yourself.

A universally mocked wannabe, the all new spangly, clean-shaven Darius, reemerges with another surprisingly decent pop tune that he actually helped write too.

While Will and Gareth have been more than agreeable puppets for record company marketing men, Darius has opted to do his own thang and make the kind of pleasant, if decidedly unfashionable, pop / rock that people in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe love so very much.

Rushes is no different, with a slew of guitar licks complimenting Darius' wordy but amiable lyrics concerning a girl that has, "a cute little dimple when she laughs too much... such is her allure." The jury's still out on the man's voice but, at times, it leaps effortlessly from baritone to falsetto with real panache. Not a bad effort at all.

HMV.co.uk Review of Rushes

As Hear'say disappear into pop's wasteland, it seems like the losers from the original 'Popstars' series are getting better and better with each and every release. There's Liberty X, of course, and the ever-so-persistent Darius Danesh. The latest single from his forthcoming album, 'Rushes' (penned by Darius himself when he was just sixteen) is an upbeat, catchy rock-tinted pop song that proves there's more to this talented singer/songwriter than merely performing other people's songs. Both formats include bonus tracks/remixes.

Bleedmusic Review of Rushes

Aaah, Darius. He's my favourite popstar at the moment. And there's no hint of irony or sarcasm there. The man who writes his own stuff and plays his own guitar is back with another easy-on-the-ear, singalong tune where he can wander through the desert in the video looking enigmatic. “Rushes” is as lovely as the man is ambitious. And whilst his reality TV show companions are crying on telly, being crushed under Jordan's ample bosom and turning more into Norman Wisdom everyday, Darius is getting on with the music. And I love him for it.

CHARMING POP BRILLIANCE

Smash Hits

Darius charms the pants off of us yet again in this ode to adrenaline rushes. Singing about the effect a special girl has on him, Darius claimsshe makes him blush and go all mushy - which just makes him all the more adorable. In the same vein as colourblind, this is a smoochy ,singalong guitar pop all the way. Girls, if you are not smitten by those big brown eyes and that soft accent yet, then you must be completley bonkers. The best thing to come out of a reality telly show ever, Darius just gets better and better

It's a pop song, it's a good pop song and it has glimpses of Erasure in it. This proves Mr D is here to stay, and also shows how poor Gareth actually is.

Darius' New Video

Popworld.com 22 October 2002

This is definitely one for all the ladies. Have you seen the new Darius video? Well, if you thought he looked hot in ‘Colourblind’, then wait until you see him in the video for his second single, ‘Rushes’. The guy is absolutely scorching! ‘Rushes’ has got hit stamped all over it and follows in the same up tempo guitar beat of his debut. The accompanying vid opens with Darius dressed in a sexy black leather outfit, hopping off a racy red motorbike before stripping to reveal his hunky bod in a white vest. Thankfully for all the girls out there, this time round there are no signs of Darius snogging a gorgeous model – we don’t think our eyes could cope with that again! What we do get to see is our fella in rocking out with his band in a packed club. Oh, Darius, we can definitely feel the love in this video.

The Mix Network Review of Rushes

Darius is a good singer-songwriter, and we're all eating humble pie after that Britney Spears/"feel the love in here" Popstars performance. How long until Britney Spears sings a song written by Darius? His last single went to the top of the charts, will Rushes equal that success? It's just as catchy, doesn't seem manufactured, and doesn't sound like Karaoke, unlike his Pop Idol rivals!

Rushes

Right now, I honestly believe this man can do no wrong. He looks great (anyone who thinks otherwise should seriously consider a trip to the optician), he's making great music, and because he didn't win that now-unmentionable competition he has credibility too. Credibility - Darius? Yes, ‘cos he's contributed a track to the new Warchild album 1Love.

Any way, I digress. 'Rushes' is the second single from Darius, following the huge number one 'Colourblind', and whilst it's still 'adult contemporary pop' it has a different feel - more beatsy and funky than its predecessor. Darius has worked with The Misfits on this one, and they've provided perfect musical ideas to compliment another excellent Darius lyric. This is most definitely Darius' strong point. Whilst he's writing about a girl who he obviously fancies the pants off (That’ll be me – Ed) , he finds interesting and original ways of expressing that emotion - first with 'Colourblind' and now again with 'Rushes'.

Darius' debut album will follow this single in November and allegedly he's out the same week as Robbie Williams, which is brave, but given the form so far I think the Robster should be just a little worried. (5/5)
