Hello!
Cosmo Girl
The ever handsome Darius has two reasons to smile this Valentine’s Day. One, he’s just been named Clinton Cards’ Celebrity Valentine Of The Year, alongside female winner Caprice, and two, he’s got himself a hot date on Feb 14 that he can’t stop smiling about. We caught up with the 6ft-something hunk as he collected his gong and we couldn’t help but notice a sparkle in his eye and spring in his step.
Darius has topped a public poll as the man most people would like as their celeb Valentine – beating hunky Duncan James into second place. “When my manager told me I was like, ‘Are you sure?’ Ten thousand people voted for me which is great,” he grins. “Valentine’s Day for me is a great excuse to eat Belgian chocolate, guilt-free. I’ll buy them for a girl and then end up eating half the box.”
Old romantic Darius let us in on his plans for Valentine’s eve but was coy about the identity of the lucky girl. “I’ve got an agreement with the housekeeper of the girl that I fancy. She’s going to let me in and I’m going to cook a candle-lit dinner and wait till she gets back,” he smiles. “I’ve got Laurent Perrier Rose too. I hope it goes well and she thinks it’s romantic, not that I’m a mad burglar!”
Darius has a lovey-dovey plan up his sleeve for V day but who is his mystery girl? “You have to tie me down and tickle me with roses to find out. I’ve been linked with a very good mate of mine,” he hints. “And no, it’s not Geri.”
And what about ex Natasha Henstridge? “I’m not saying,” he says (with a blush?). “Let’s just say I’m single now but I hope not to be after Monday.”
The sweetest thing a gal has done for big D on the big V was write a song for him. And no, it wasn’t Geri! “It was romantic. We Brits have a problem with articulating ourselves so when someone actually does tell you how they feel it kinda takes you aback. I didn’t see it coming and yes it did work,” he says. “I’m quite easy when it comes to being wooed though. Eye contact and a smile does it for me.”
“As a man I’m not afraid of making a romantic gesture,” says Darius. So what is romance to him? “Oh, it can be anything. You can’t frame it or save it. It can be whispering into your lover’s ear watching the sun set on a beach or a single red rose and a kiss. Basically it’s about showing you care in an unusual way,” he says, offering a sound word of advice to all hopeless – in the literal sense! – romantics.
Boys have it hard when it comes to love and stuff, says Darius. “You girls have it so easy! You have things like Sex And The City and Bridget Jones which encourages you to talk about emotions,” he says. “We boys go down the pub, drink a pint and talk about football. We might say if we’ve had a row with our girlfriends but we don’t know how to talk about how much we love them. And we should.”
He might be one smooth mover now but once upon a time Darius dreaded V Day. “I was completely geeky, the lanky one that got one Valentine card from his mum. I once got one from the head girl because she knew I wouldn’t get any! But I think the day you feel comfortable with yourself is the day your fortunes change,” he says. “For me it was when I released Colourblind and my card tally has risen ever since.”
