WELCOME BACK DARIUS

Teletext 22 October 2004

Chocolate button-eyed crooner Darius is back – with a catchy choon that looks set to get him a high new entry in Sunday’s Top 40. He says he doesn’t feel like he’s been away but in reality the charts have been without the strapping Scotsman for well over a year. A lot has happened in that time, both good and bad, but as he’s been telling us it’s made him a stronger person.

Darius says that he’s done a lot of growing up since he found out his dad had cancer. “I had to face up to the prospect of being a father figure to my nine-year-old brother. It made me face up to my role as son, too,” he tells us. “The last six months have been the most inspiring musically. I have been prolific. Before that I had writers’ block and couldn’t write a note.”

Watching his dad bravely fight cancer – and defy doctors’ prognosis – inspired Darius. “I took the pressure off myself by saying my family is what’s important now, not the music career,” he says. “I wrote a song about my dad. It’s the title song of the album, Live Twice. I played it to him in hospital and he told me it deserved to be heard. He plays the album every morning!”

Darius admits he’s not that bothered if his fab new alb Live Trice doesn’t do well in the charts. “Even if only a handful of people buy it I don’t mind. I wrote it for selfish reasons. I wrote it for my dad. It’s the most intimate material I’ve ever written and I am nervous about it. But it was a cathartic experience and the emotional value of producing it was worth more than a platinum disc.”

Darius admits he kept a close eye on Robbie Williams’ comeback while gearing up for his own. “I am a big Robbie fan but for his songwriting rather than the tabloid exploits. It was a brave move for him to release Radio,” he tells us. “I don’t actually think it’s a great song but it allows us to see him in a different light. The tried-and-tested method is boring for him.”

Rather than throwing himself back into the limelight a la Robbie, Darius wants a low-key return. “I wanted a more organic comeback,” he says. “I’ve been listening to a lot of Keane and Maroon 5. I think the new album fits into the same category.” Who else does he see himself sitting alongside? “I see Daniel Bedingfield as the new crop. He set the benchmark with If You’re Not The One.”

Another artist Darius has loadsa respect for is his old Pop Idol pal Will Young. “Leave Right Now was a song that had been sitting on a shelf for five years and Will made it his own,” he says. Does he think a reality TV show can ever find another Will? “I don’t know. I love watching the X Factor but whether it will produce a best-selling artist is another matter.”

Darius got his break via Pop Idol but as an artist he’s a million miles away from the show now. “I’m not afraid to stray from the pop path,” he tells Ace. “I’ve written a track on the album which is a throwback to Frank Sinatra’s Under My Skin. There’s also a track where I sing in a way I’ve never sung before, using my whole vocal range. The album is one of exploration.”
