Hello!
Cosmo Girl
Charmer:
Darius with VJ Sophiya
Singer Darius greets everyone he meets very warmly. If it’s a man, he’ll shake hands politely. And if it’s a woman, he’ll welcome her with a peck on her cheek.
Here to perform at the Tata Indicom and MTV Immies this evening, Darius is charming and soft-spoken through the interview.
So after shaking hands, he says, “Oh, so we’ve done a telephone interview before. Good to meet you in person.” We meet him at the J W Marriott Hotel:
Your new album Live Twice is just out. After your successful debut album Dive In, how did you go about working on this one?
The album has been inspired by my father. When we discovered that he had terminal cancer, I decided to stop my musical career for a while. But he insisted that I continue. I wrote the title song for my father, and after that, he listened to each song that I wrote. He was truly inspired, and two weeks ago, we were told that he’d had a miraculous recovery.
In terms of sound, how have you changed?
My basic influences remain the same — Seal, Enrique Iglesias and George Michael. But yes, there has been a natural evolution in terms of sound.
Besides these three, who have been your other influences?
Among the bands, there are The Beatles and U2. Among the new bands, I also listen to Keane and Maroon 5. And yes, I’m also a big Bryan Adams fan. He’s one of the greatest songwriters around.
When you came on the scene, a lot of youngsters were doing cover versions. What made you stick to original music?
Songwriting has always been a passion. I always wanted to present something new. I love a lot of old songs, but the real challenge is to succeed with new songs.
Has your vis it to India inspired you to write a song?
I have already begun writing one. I wrote something at the back of my plane ticket. I’m thrilled to come here. For 10 years, I’ve been wanting to come to India. Here I am, at last.
You have a huge following among the female fans. How do you deal with star-struck admirers?
I’m flattered to have a female following. I embrace anyone who is kind enough to give me cheer and support.
Do you have a girl-friend?
At the moment, I am single. Who knows? I might find my dream girl in India.
The albums Dive In and Live Twice are available in India on Universal Music
